ABOUT THE EVENT:

Derby Day at the Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo is one of the highlights of Argentina’s racing calendar and a fantastic way to experience the country’s deep-rooted passion for thoroughbred racing. At the centre of the day is the Gran Premio Nacional, the Argentine Derby, a prestigious Group 1 contest run over 2,500 metres for three-year-old horses.

First run in 1884, the Argentine Derby is one of the oldest and most important races in Latin American racing. It forms the final leg of the Argentine Triple Crown and has long been one of the defining occasions of the Palermo season.

The race itself is particularly exciting for spectators, with the 2,500-metre distance meaning the start takes place directly in front of the grandstands. This gives racegoers an unusually close view of the runners as they head away from the stalls before the field makes its way around the historic Palermo track.

The racecourse provides an impressive setting for the occasion. Opened in 1876, Palermo is one of Buenos Aires' most historic sporting venues, with its grand Beaux-Arts architecture and famous Tribuna Oficial overlooking the finishing straight. The venue attracts a broad cross-section of Buenos Aires society on major race days, creating a lively and distinctly Argentine atmosphere.

Marc and the Venatour team's 2025 racing tour to Argentina was a fantastic trip - well organised and with excellent additions like Iguazu Falls, a stud farm visit and some top class polo matches. Venatour's planning and having local guides on hand made everything go smoothly.

Andy H.

Venatour's trip to Argentina, was the most fabulous way to experience Argentina for the very first time. Definitely a trip of a lifetime. Nobody could have done it better than Venatour.

Suzi PJ.

Wow what a fantastic trip to Argentina we had with Venatour. Organisation was first class and all experiences went perfectly. The highlight for us was the Iguazu Falls. An unforgettable holiday.
